The terms, explained.
Safety work comes with its own language. Here is what the most common terms mean.
- Contractor safety file
- The documents a contractor must have before starting work on a client's site: appointments, risk assessments, procedures, medicals, training records and more.
- Safety file index
- The mine's or client's own list of what your safety file must contain, and in what order. Every client has its own.
- ComplyWorks
- A contractor management platform that several mines use to onboard and approve contractors before they get site access.
- Onboarding
- The steps a client follows to approve a contractor before site access, such as document checks, inductions and medicals.
- Scope of work
- A clear description of the work you will do on site. Your risk assessments and procedures are built around it.
- Letter of Good Standing
- Proof from the Compensation Fund that your COIDA registration and payments are up to date. Most clients ask for a current one.
- Method statement
- Describes how a specific job will be done safely, step by step, with the people, equipment and controls involved.
- TBRATask-based risk assessment
- Identifies and controls the risks of one specific task before the work starts.
Good questions, straight answers.
Do you only help contractors on mines?
No. We compile safety files for contractors on mines, plants, factories, construction sites and any other client site, to the Mine Health and Safety Act, the OHS Act or the Construction Regulations, whichever applies.
Can you help us with ComplyWorks?
Yes. We guide you through registration and uploads, and make sure the documents you load are the ones the mine is looking for. We also help with onboarding at mines that use their own contractor systems.
Our safety file was sent back. Can you fix it?
Yes. Send us the file and the client's comments. You get a free written list of what is wrong, and a quote to fix it.
How long does a safety file take?
It depends on the client's index, your scope of work and how much you already have. We agree a delivery date with you up front, before any work starts.
How do you charge?
You get a written, fixed quote per safety file or per project before any work starts, so you can price it into your tender. The first check is free.
